President Xi Jinping Speaks with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte of the Philippines On the Phone

On the evening of 11 June, President Xi Jinping spoke with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte of the Philippines on the phone.

President Xi commend the solidarity and mutual assistance between the Chinese and Philippine governments and peoples in COVID-19 response as a vivid illustration of the brotherly friendship between the two countries. Xi noted the rigorous and effective measures the Philippines has adopted under the leadership of President Duterte, saying that he felt heartened to see the good results thus achieved. Xi also expressed confidence in the ability of the Philippine people, united as one, will defeat the virus and restore normal order of life and work at an early date.

Xi underlined that China will continue to render firm support to the Philippines in light of its needs. Acting in the belief that mankind is in a community with a shared future, China has been sharing capital, experience and confidence for the global response against COVID-19 and extended a helping hand to countries in need. China will work closely with the Philippines to enhance international solidarity against the virus, support the WHO leadership role and rally the efforts to build a global community of health for all.

Describing COVID-19 as a crisis, Xi underlined the importance of exploring new opportunities in challenging times and making new advances amid changes. Given that disease control will last for quite some time, the two countries need to think up new ways to gradually restore the necessary flow of people to advance practical cooperation in all fields, which is good for both economies and peoples. Xi expressed his confidence that as the two countries work together on COVID-19 response and economic recovery, their time-honored friendship and mutual trust will deepen and their relationship of comprehensive strategic cooperation will embrace greater prospects. History will prove that friendship between China and the Philippines serves the fundamental and long-term interests of the two peoples, Xi added.

Duterte noted that this year marks 45 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China, describing it as an important milestone of the relationship. He commended the strong leadership of President Xi, under which China has not only prevailed over the virus, but also directed a helping hand to partners such as the Philippines. He welcomed President Xi's statement that COVID-19 vaccine development and deployment in China, when available, will be made a global public good. Duterte applauded this as good for humanity. He reaffirmed that the Philippines will always be a friend of China and will never allow anyone to use the Philippines for activities against China. The Philippines remains committed to even deeper and stronger amity between the two peoples. It is also ready to expand cooperation with China in all areas, as it gears up for the resumption of economic activities. Duterte also expressed the Philippines' readiness for closer collaboration with China and the WHO.
